Onslow Iron port and mine construction

Spanning more than two years, the Onslow Iron Port and Mine Construction Project showcased Base Group Australia’s ability to deliver largescale, complex logistics with exceptional HSE performance and technical operational excellence. Our work on this project has led directly to ongoing operational support for Mineral Resources.

Scope of Work

  • Cargo Coordination: Managed and handled every piece of cargo entering Australia for the project.
  • Laydown & Logistics: Received, arranged, and stored cargo in a Base supplied laydown area, coordinating onward logistics to multiple construction sites.
  • Stevedoring & Material Handling: Provided full stevedoring services, project management, and storage facilities, supported by our diverse fleet of material handling equipment and highly skilled stevedores.
  • International Vessel Management: Oversaw numerous international project cargo vessels over the course of the build, ensuring tens of thousands of manhours incidentfree, consistently on time and under budget.
  • PreAssembly Support: Continued to assist with all preassembly works until project completion.

Key Milestone

The BigLift vessel Happy Dover utilised the Port of Ashburton as its First Port of Entry, undergoing inspections by DAFF and Australia Customs. This marked the first international vessel to berth at the port since it was officially handed back to the State — a significant milestone in the port’s operational history.
