Overview

In partnership with BHP and Fugro, Base Marine delivered end-to-end logistics and marine support for the creation of King Reef in Exmouth Gulf — now the largest artificial reef in the southern hemisphere and a thriving community asset.

Scope of Work

  • Specialised Mooring Facility: Designed, supplied, and installed a purpose-built mooring system in Exmouth Gulf to receive decommissioned oil field materials.
  • Marine Handling: Transported materials from the offshore field to the mooring facility.
  • Preparation & Modification: Rotated, stabilised, and modified structures inwater before lifting them ashore.
  • Surface Treatment: Removed all coatings to ensure environmental safety.
  • Reef Deployment: Returned prepared structures to the water to form the artificial reef.

Project Impact

King Reef has transformed into a thriving marine ecosystem, attracting diverse marine life and supporting local tourism, fishing, and research. Its scale and success highlight Base’s capability to deliver complex marine infrastructure projects with lasting environmental and community benefits.
